Following ideas put forward by the community at the General Meeting held on 9 September 2024, a letterbox and email survey was distributed to residents. 23 residents responded to indicate their preferred options, the top being the allotment and irrigation system proposal.
An application for funding to support the community’s favoured project was submitted to Southwark Council’s ‘Cleaner, Greener, Safer’ scheme. This application seeks funding to create a Community Allotment in Pullens Gardens, focusing on food sustainability, herbal planting, and knowledge sharing. Local residents will grow medicinal herbs, fruits, and vegetables, gaining skills in self-sufficiency and confidence in natural remedies.
Newington faces multiple health and dependency challenges, and this project aims to address them through a wellbeing approach centred on herbalism, sustainability, and community engagement. We request funding to develop a planting scheme and install irrigation for the gardens.
Developing a solid infrastructure will enable monthly workshops that will teach the traditional uses of herbs for wellness, promoting self-sufficiency, environmental stewardship, and holistic health. This initiative will empower the community to adopt sustainable, health-focused practices.
Applications will be considered by our Councillors in March 2025, with decisions made shortly after.
